3 Votes: NMFC Media Dept

At times, I’ve been critical of North Melbourne Football Club’s use of social media. But over the past six months they have really come into their own, and can now claim to be one of the leading AFL clubs when it comes to social media engagement. This morning, they really hit the nail on the head.

  1. I have to disagree on this point. Social Media is after all supposed to be ‘Social’. NMFC have become very good at broadcasting via Facebook and Twitter, but they are pretty unresponsive when it comes to being social with people.

    A club like North Melbourne needs to work twice as hard as the rest of the league to make members feel a part of the club. Social media offers an opportunity to do just that, but so far they have just managed to send news via ‘new’ channels. Have a look at their twitter page, they follow 41 accounts vs 1326 followers. Most of those 41 accounts are footy clubs or journos, not fans.

    Why not start following fans, why not start engaging with them? Start a conversation, what do they think of the team? Who do they think was the best player on the weekend? Who is the tip of the Syd Barker this year?

    The opportunities to engage members in conversation are endless, and in engaging people in conversation and listening to their opinion members will feel more connected to the club and thus are more likely to renew or upgrade their membership.

    I agree that they have come a long way, but if they want to realise the true benefits social media can offer an organisation like NMFC they have a long way to go.

    I just saw the tickets to the nab cup game comp – this is a great step in the right direction. 🙂

    • I largely agree with you – they don’t tend to respond much to @replies on Twitter. They have started to ask what people think on Facebook occasionally, and they respond to people’s whinges re: membership problems whenever they come up. But they could easily do more in this regard.

      But the main problem is that while NMFC have tried to start up conversations on their website – which is the ideal place for them – the comment functionality/style is, quite frankly, shithouse. Unfortunately this is a Bigpond site issue, so NMFC can’t do a whole lot about it.

    Who says they have to interact with their fans?
    I will stick up for the boys here.
    They don’t have to do any such thing. They are happy to have people follow and support them because us as supporters and members get easily get to the point of what they want you to do and that is exposing them to the public.
    They are only starting to talk to us because they can. It’s great for them early days.
    They are very wary of what is going on around them. The north boys know who the bullies are and they know who the loyal fans are.
